Multifunctional synthetic ingredient most commonly used as a skin humectant and preservative booster.
Acacia Senegal Gum
Naturally-derived thickening agent and film former primarily used to help improve the texture of certain skin care products.
Acer Saccharum (Sugar Maple) Extract
Contains Alpha Hydroxy Acids that help gently exfoliate and condition skin. Sourced from Sugar Maple trees.
Acetic Acid (Apple Cider Vinegar)
Helps clarify and normalize skin and hair as well as balance the pH of formulas. Commonly known as Apple Cider Vinegar.
Achillea Millefolium Extract
Helps to soothe and balance skin's appearance. Sourced from Yarrow plants.
Actinidia Chinensis (Kiwi) Fruit Extract
A source of antioxidants that can help guard against free radical damage.
Alcohol
Helps to dissolve certain ingredients such as Salicylic Acid. Can also help to extract ingredients from plants and improve product application. Naturally derived.
Aleurites Moluccanus (Kukui)
Helps soothe skin and moisturize skin and hair. Derived from the Kukui nut. Included as an Oil and Extract.
Algin
Type of carbohydrate found in brown algae that is primarily used to improve the texture of certain skin care products. Derived from Seaweed.
Allantoin
Helps to soothe and condition skin. Synthetic.
Aloe Barbadensis
Helps to soothe, moisturize and condition the skin. Derived from the Aloe plant. Included as a Flower Extract, Leaf Extract, Leaf Juice, Leaf Powder or Leaf Water,
Amino Esters-1
Mixture of amino acids that help to maintain skin's hydration. Naturally derived.
Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer
Synthetic polymer used as a film-forming agent, thickener and texture enhancer. Because of its water-binding properties, the film leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth.
Amyl Cinnamal
Synthetic fragrance ingredient with a floral/jasmine scent.
Amylopectin
Primarily functions as a natural thickener and texture enhancer. Main component of starch, naturally derived from rice, waxy potato starch and waxy corn.
Anhydroxylitol
Naturally derived from Xylitol, a sugar found on cellulose of wood, sugarcane, corn cobs and certain seed hulls that serves as a humectant to help skin absorb and retain moisture.
Aqua (Water)
Most commonly used cosmetic ingredient. Almost always listed first on an ingredient list because of its concentration in the formula.
Arachidyl Alcohol
Naturally-derived fatty alcohol primarily used as a viscosity controlling agent and emollient. As an emollient, it works to soften or soothe the skin or hair.
Arachidyl Glucoside
Naturally-derived surfactant and emulsifier that helps to keep skin hydrated and leaves skin feeling moisturized and clean.
Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi Leaf Extract
Bearberry plant extract known to have antioxidant and skin-brightening properties.
Ascorbic Acid
Naturally-derived, water-soluble form of Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant. Also known as L-ascorbic Acid.
Ascorbyl Glucoside
Water-soluble, synthetic and stable form of Vitamin C obtained by the condensation of ascorbic acid with glucose. Known to be an effective antioxidant and skin brightener.
Ascorbyl Palmitate
Fat soluble, synthetic and stable form of Vitamin C that is an effective antioxidant which helps to guard against environmental damage.
Aspalathus Linearis
Plant extract known to have antioxidant and skin-conditioning properties. Processed from the Rooibos Tea plant and included as an Extract, Leaf Extract and a Leaf/Stalk Extract.
Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract
Plant extract known to help condition and soothe skin.
Beeswax
Wax that helps to thicken formulas and also provides emollient benefits.
Behentrimonium Chloride
Cleansing and conditioning agent that helps to detangle, fight static, condition and soften hair. Known in technical terms as a “cationic quaternary ammonium compound” naturally derived from the Turnip Rape.
Behenyl Alcohol
Naturally-derived large fatty straight-chain alcohol emulsifier in skin care formulations.
Bentonite
Aluminum silicate clay used to help absorb oil from the skin.
Benzoic Acid
Aromatic carboxylic acid that is commonly used as a preservative or pH adjuster in cosmetic, skincare, food and beverage products. Can be naturally derived or synthetic.
Benzyl Alcohol
Aromatic alcohol with a floral-like scent that is naturally occurring in some fruits and teas or synthetically produced. Most commonly used as a preservative in cosmetics.
Benzyl Benzoate
Commonly used as fragrance ingredient, preservative and solvent. Can be naturally derived or synthetic.
Beta-Carotene (CI 40800,75130)
Yellow/orange naturally-derived plant pigment that gives vegetables and fruits their color. Also known to have antioxidant properties.
Beta-Glucan
Polysaccharide sugar naturally-derived from yeast or oats. Helps to soothe irritated skin as well as has some antioxidant properties.
Betaine
Primarily used in skin care for its moisturizing power and helps to keep skin feeling hydrated and balanced. Originally discovered in Sugar Beets, which is where the name betaine comes from.
Biosaccharide Gum-1
Fermentation gum naturally derived from Sorbitol known to have moisturizing and skin soothing properties.
Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2
A semi-solid emollient most often used as a lanolin substitute.
Bisabolol
Skin soothing oil typically extracted from German Chamomile that can help reduce the appearance of redness. Can also be synthetically produced.
Bixa Orellana Seed Oil
Naturally-derived colorant that produces a deep yellow-orange to red color that also is known to have skin conditioning properties. Commonly known as Annato Oil.
Brassica Oleracea Italica (Broccoli) Extract
Skin-conditioning agent extracted from the Broccoli plant.
Butylphenyl Methylpropional
Synthetic fragrance ingredient, also known as Lilial, with a strong floral scent.
Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter
Plant fat extracted from the nuts of the Shea tree used as an emollient to help form a protective barrier over skin to hold in moisture and help improve skin elasticity.
C12-20 Alkyl Glucoside
Plant-based emulsifier that is usually accompanied with C14-22 Alcohols.
C14-22 Alcohols
Primarily used as emulsifier along with C12-20 Alkyl Glucoside. Derived from a mixture of plant-based fatty alcohols.
Caesalpinia Spinosa Gum
Acts as a thickener, emulsion stabilizer and texturizing agent. Plant material derived from the dried, gummy exudate of the Tara tree.
Caffeine
Stimulant found in coffee, tea and chocolate known to help tighten and brighten the skin. Can also be synthetically produced.
Calcium Carbonate
Commonly used as an absorbent in skin care products to help mattify and absorb excess oil. Naturally derived.
Calcium Sulfate
Primarily used in the cosmetic industry as a color additive, opacifier and binder. Sometimes referred to as Gypsum, Alabaster, "Plaster of Paris" or Terra Alba. Can be naturally derived or synthetic.
Calluna Vulgaris Flower Extract
Plant extract with skin-soothing properties. Derived from the Common Heather plant.
Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract/Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract
Plant extracts known to have antioxidant and skin-soothing properties. Helps to improve the appearance of stressed skin. Derived from Green Tea.
Candelilla/Jojoba/Rice Bran Polyglyceryl-3 Esters
Primarily functions as an emulsion stabilizer, thickener and emulsifier. Natural wax derivative obtained from the combination of Polyglycerin-3 (from Glycerin), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Jojoba Wax and Rice Bran Wax.
Caprylhydroxamic Acid
Primarily used as a chelating agent or preservative. Amino acid naturally derived from Coconut Oil.
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride
Helps to replenish skin's surface and moisturize skin. Emollient naturally derived from Coconut Oil and Glycerin.
Caprylyl Glycol
Skin-conditioning agent and preservative most commonly obtained from naturally-derived plant oils.
Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside
Nonionic surfactant or cleansing agent obtained from fatty alcohols and glucose. Naturally derived.
Capsicum Frutescens Fruit Extract
Skin-conditioning agent used to help improve the appearance of skin's tone. Extract of the dried fruit of the Cayenne Pepper.
Carbomer
Term used for a series of synthetic polymers primarily made from acrylic acid that function as texture enhancers to create gel-like formulations.
Carrageenan
Natural gum obtained from various types of Seaweed used to thicken and stabilize products. Also known to have water-binding properties.
Cetearyl Alcohol
Mixture of naturally-derived, fatty alcohols consisting predominantly of cetyl and stearyl alcohols. Can be used as texture enhancer, emollient and as a foaming agent. Used along with similar ingredients to give products texture and slip.
Cetearyl Glucoside
Primarily used as an emulsifier. Naturally-derived product of the condensation of Cetearyl Alcohol with Glucose.
Cetearyl Olivate
Texture enhancer and emulsifier. Naturally derived from Cetearyl Alcohol and the fatty acids obtained from Olive Oil.
Cetyl Alcohol
Used as an emulsifier, emollient and thickening agent. Mixture of naturally-derived fatty alcohols.
Cetyl Palmitate
Used primarily as a thickener and emollient that helps skin feel smooth and moisturized. Most commonly derived from plant oils.
Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria)
Plant extract with antioxidant and skin soothing properties. Forms include Extract, Flower Extract and Leaf Extract. Sourced from the German Chamomile plant.
Charcoal Powder
Dried, carbonaceous material naturally obtained from the heating of organic substances such as Wood, Bamboo or Coconut Husk. Used to help detoxify skin and remove surface impurities.
Charcoal Powder (Binchotan White Charcoal)
Traditional Japanese charcoal made by heating wood to a temperature of 1000° C (1832° F) and then covering it with a moist mixture of earth, sand and ash to cool. Due to the different processing method, can be gentler and less drying than black charcoal.
Chlorphenesin
Synthetic preservative used in skin care as a cosmetic biocide.
Chondrus Crispus Extract
Rich source of beta-carotene and the antioxidants Zeaxanthin and Lutein which can help hydrate skin and guard against the visible effects of blue light exposure. Sourced from a type of seaweed also known as Red Algae.
Chromium Oxide Greens (CI 77288)
Inorganic, green pigment used as a colorant.
Citral
Main component of citrus fruit's peel oil. Most commonly used as a fragrance ingredient.
Citric Acid
Naturally-derived Alpha Hydroxy Acid used in personal care products primarily as a pH adjuster.
Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon) Fruit Extract
Fruit extract known to be packed with water and antioxidants, including Lycopene, to give skin a light hydration and leave skin refreshed. Naturally derived from Watermelon.
Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime)
Contains antioxidant Vitamin C and can be used to brighten skin's appearance. Forms include Peel Extract and Fruit Extract.
Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Extract
Extract known to help balance and soothe skin.
Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange)/Citrus Sinensis (Orange) Fruit Extract
Extract known to have antioxidant properties. Forms include Fruit Extract and Peel Extract.
Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit)
Extract known to have antioxidant properties to help skin appear brighter and more evenly toned. Forms include Extract, Fruit Extract, Fruit Water, Peel Extract and Seed Extract.
Citrus Limon (Lemon)
Extract that may help brighten skin and make it appear more evenly toned. Forms include Fruit Extract, Peel Extract and Peel Oil.
Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit)
Extract known to help balance and brighten the skin. Forms include Fruit Extract, Seed Extract and Seed Oil.
Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Naturally-derived mild cleansing agent often used as a secondary surfactant and lather booster.
Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine
Naturally-derived mild surfactant. Can also be used as a foam booster and conditioning agent for the hair and skin.
Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract
Skin-conditioning agent in skincare formulations. Naturally derived from Ivy Gourd.
Coco-Caprylate
Emollient naturally derived from Coconut Oil and Caprylic Acid.
Coco-Caprylate/Caprate
Functions as an emollient and skin-softening agent. Mixture of Coconut Alcohol with Caprylic Acid and Capric Acid, which are found naturally in various plant oils.
Coco-Glucoside
Mild cleansing agent naturally obtained by the condensation of Coconut Alcohol with Glucose.
Coconut Alkanes
Helps lock in moisture by sitting on the skin to create a barrier. Naturally-derived from the complete reduction and hydrogenation of fatty acids derived from Coconut Oil.
Cocos Nucifera (Coconut)
Used as a skin-conditioning agent or emollient depending on the form. Shell Powder can be used as a natural exfoliant. Forms include an Oil, Extract, Fruit Extract, Fruit Juice, Fruit Powder, Liquid Endosperm and Shell Powder.
Coffea Arabica (Coffee)
Antioxidant that helps to reduce the visible signs of aging. Powder can also be used as an exfoliant. Forms include a Seed Extract and Seed Powder.
Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax
Naturally-derived wax obtained from the leaves and leaf buds of Copernicia cerifera. It is often used in lip care products for barrier protection and as an emollient.
Corallina Officinalis Extract
Naturally derived from Red Algae. Most commonly used as a texture enhancer or emollient.
Coumarin
Fragrance ingredient with a vanilla-like odor with grassy elements. Can be naturally derived or synthetic.
Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Extract
Plant extract known for its skin-soothing properties. Forms include Extract, Fruit Extract, Fruit Water, Seed Extract and Seed Oil.
Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin) Fruit Extract
Extract most commonly used as an antioxidant or skin-conditioning agent.
Cupressus Sempervirens Oil
Most commonly used as a fragrance ingredient. Fragrant plant oil obtained from the Cypress tree.
Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract
Antioxidant plant extract known to help normalize skin and help reduce the appearance of redness.
Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed Oil
Plant oil known for its antioxidant properties that may help to reduce the visible signs of aging.
Decyl Glucoside
Plant-derived ingredient used as a mild cleansing agent.
Dehydroacetic Acid
Synthetic preservative most effective on fungi.
Dehydroxanthan Gum
Natural texture enhancer and thickening agent produced by the dehydration of Xanthan Gum.
Dextrin
Most often used as a texture enhancer or adhesive. Naturally-derived water-binding polysaccharide that helps to increase the solubility of water-insoluble compounds.
Dicaprylyl Carbonate
Naturally-derived emollient and skin-conditioning agent.
Dicaprylyl Ether
Emulsifier and skin-conditioning agent. Naturally derived from Caprylic Acid, a fatty acid found in various plant oils.
Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate
Known to help skin appear more evenly toned. Skin-conditioning agent naturally derived from Licorice Root.
Epilobium Angustifolium Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract
Plant extract known to have antioxidant and skin-soothing properties. Sourced from Willow Herb.
Erythritol
Known to have humectant properties that help condition and lock in skin's moisture. Sugar Alcohol found in certain fermented foods and fruits such as Melons or Grapes.
Ethylcellulose
Plant-derived texture enhancer obtained from cellulose.
Ethylhexyl Palmitate
Naturally-derived emollient that can help reduce the appearance of dry skin. Also used as a texture enhancer to help improve the sensory feel of some products.
Ethylhexylglycerin
Multifunctional humectant that can aid in the preservation of cosmetic formulas. Synthetic.
Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax
Naturally-derived wax obtained from candelilla plants. It is often used in lip care products for barrier protection and as an emollient.
Evodia Rutaecarpa Fruit Extract
Extract derived from the Evodia Fruit known for its skin-soothing properties in both Chinese medicine and topically in skin care applications.
Flavor (Aroma)
Defined by the FDA as any natural or synthetic substance used solely to impart a taste to a cosmetic product. Can be naturally derived or synthetic.
Fragrance (Parfum)
Defined by the FDA as a combination of chemicals that gives each perfume or cologne its distinct scent. Can be naturally derived or synthetic.
Galactoarabinan
Powerful hydrating ingredient for the skin obtained from the Larch tree.
Gellan Gum
Naturally-derived fermented polysaccharide used as a texture enhancer as well as to aid in the stability of a formulation.
Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract
Antioxidant and skin-conditioning agent known to soothe skin and help guard against environmental aggressors and oxidative stress. Naturally derived from the Ginkgo tree.
Glucomannan
Prebiotic sugar derived from the konjac plant most often used as a hydrating ingredient.
Gluconolactone
Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA) that gently exfoliates the skin. Can be naturally derived or synthetic.
Glucose
Naturally-derived sugar known for its water-binding properties.
Glycerin
Humectant obtained from various plant oils. Known for its skin-replenishing and skin-restoring properties.
Glyceryl Caprylate
Used to stabilize oil-in-water emulsions and moisten skin. Co-emulsifier produced from various kinds of vegetable oils. Also used as a naturally-derived preservative along with Glyceryl Undecylenate.
Glyceryl Caprylate/Caprate
Vegetable-derived ingredient that can be used as an emollient, surfactant and emulsifier.
Glyceryl Laurate
Multifunctional ingredient produced from vegetable-derived Glycerin and Lauric acid from various plant oils. Most often used as a skin-conditioning agent and emollient.
Glyceryl Oleate
Most often used as an emollient, surfactant and emulsifier. Vegetable-derived ingredient made by combining Glycerin and Oleic Acid (from olive or vegetable oils).
Glyceryl Stearate/Glyceryl Stearate SE
Most often used as an emollient, surfactant and emulsifier. Vegetable-derived ingredient made by combining Glycerin and Stearic Acid (from vegetable fats). Glyceryl Stearate SE is the self-emulsifying form of Glyceryl Stearate.
Glyceryl Undecylenate
Most often used as an emulsifier but also can be used as a preservative. Vegetable-derived ingredient made by combining Glycerin and Undecylenic Acid (from Castor Oil).
Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil
Most often used as an emollient and skin-conditioning agent. Oil expressed from Soybeans.
Glycolic Acid
Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) that chemically exfoliates to help improve skin's tone and texture. Can be naturally derived or synthetic.
Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract
Plant extract known for its skin-soothing and antioxidant properties.
Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride
Polymer used as a conditioning agent for skin and hair. Also provides anti-static properties for the hair. Naturally-derived Guar Gum.
Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel)
Skin-conditioning agent and antioxidant that helps to balance, soothe and reduce the appearance of redness. Forms include Bark/Leaf/Twig Extract, Extract, Leaf Extract, Leaf Water and Water.
Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower)
Non-fragrant plant oil used as an emollient and skin-conditioning agent. Forms include Oil, Extract and Wax.
Heptyl Glucoside
Naturally-derived solubilizer and cleansing agent from Sugar and Castor seeds.
Hexyl Cinnamal
Fragrance ingredient naturally derived from Chamomile Oil that has a jasmine-like aroma. Can be naturally derived or synthetic.
Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract
Plant extract from the Hibiscus flower known to contain Vitamin C, anthocyanins, polyphenols and water-soluble antioxidants.
Honey (Mel)
Natural humectant and skin-conditioning agent that helps maintain skin's moisture.
Hordeum Vulgare Seed Extract
Extract that contains phenols which are known to provide antioxidant activity to help guard against free-radicals. Naturally derived from the Barley plant.
Hyaluronic Acid
Powerful humectant capable of holding up to 1,000 times its own weight in water to help prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL), making it an optimal hydrator for all skin types. Naturally derived.
Hydrogenated Castor Oil
Emollient used on skin's surface to help stop moisture loss and keep skin feeling soft. Naturally derived from the Castor Bean.
Hydrogenated Jojoba Oil
Naturally-derived exfoliant derived from the hydrogenation of Jojoba Oil. Commonly known as Jojoba Beads.
Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides
Naturally-derived emollient that helps condition and soften the skin.
Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides Citrate
Primarily used as an emollient and skin-conditioning agent. Naturally derived.
Hydrogenated Vegetable Glycerides
Primarily used as an emollient to help condition and soften the skin. Naturally derived.
Hydrolyzed Corn Protein
Hydrolyzed protein fraction of corn that is most often used as a naturally-derived conditioning agent.
Hydrolyzed Jojoba Esters
Used as a skin-conditioning agent. Essential fatty acids from the Jojoba plant that are broken down by acid, enzyme or other method of hydrolysis.
Hydrolyzed Soy Protein
Skin and hair conditioning ingredient that also has antioxidant properties. Naturally derived from Soybeans.
Hydrolyzed Tomato Skin
Functions as a skin-conditioning agent. Concentrate of Tomato skins obtained by hydrolysis.
Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein
Hydrolyzed protein fraction of wheat that functions as a naturally-derived texture enhancer and conditioning agent.
Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose
Plant-derived texture enhancer derived from cellulose.
Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate
A naturally-derived starch that primarily functions as a thickening agent and can also be used to stabilize skin care formulations.
Hydroxypropyltrimonium Honey
Used to condition and detangle hair. Quaternary ammonium compound derived from Honey.
Illite
Group of clay micas also known as French Green Clay that help to absorb excess oil from the skin. Normally combined with other clays such as Bentonite or Kaolin.
Ipomoea Batatas Extract
Helps to moisturize and condition skin. Plant extract obtained from the Sweet Potato.
Iron Oxides (CI 77491)
Naturally-derived colorant also known as Red Iron Oxides.
Iron Oxides (CI 77492)
Naturally-derived colorant also known as Yellow Iron Oxides.
Iron Oxides (CI 77499)
Naturally-derived colorant also known as Black Iron Oxides.
Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Flower Extract
Plant extract from the Jasmine flower most often used as a fragrance ingredient or skin-conditioning agent.
Jojoba Esters
Commonly used as an emollient but can also be used as a natural exfoliant in solid form. Naturally derived from the Jojoba plant.
Kaolin
Aluminum silicate clay used to help absorb oil from the skin.
Krameria Triandra Root Extract
Plant extract derived from the root of the Rhatany shrub known for its astringent and skin-soothing properties.
Lactic Acid
Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) that gently exfoliates to help improve skin's tone and texture. Can be naturally derived or synthetic.
Lactobacillus Ferment/ Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate
Non-living probiotic made by fermentation of the microorganism Lactobacillus. It is known for its skin-soothing benefits and may help balance skin's microbiome.
Lactobacillus/Lemon Peel Ferment Extract
Known to help balance the appearance of skin's tone. Extract of the product obtained by the fermentation of Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel by the microorganism, Lactobacillus.
Lactococcus Ferment Lysate
Known to help strengthen skin's barrier function. Non-living probiotic made by fermentation of the microorganism, Lactococcus.
Lauramine Oxide
Multifunctional synthetic ingredient primarily used as an anti-static agent, surfactant or foam booster.
Lauryl Glucoside
Plant-derived ingredient used as a mild cleansing agent.
Lauryl Laurate
Plant-based emollient made from a mixture of vegetable oils that can be used as a natural replacement for lightweight silicones.
Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil
Primarily used as a fragrance ingredient but is also known to help clarify and soothe skin.
Lecithin
Used as an emollient or water-binding agent. Natural lipid primarily found in plants such as Soybeans or Sunflowers.
Lens Esculenta (Lentil) Seed Extract
Plant extract known for its skin-softening benefits. Sourced from the Lentil plant.
Leontopodium Alpinum Flower Extract
Plant extract from the Edelweiss flower most often used as a skin-soothing ingredient.
Lepidium Sativum Sprout Extract
Plant extract that shows some antioxidant and skin-brightening benefits. Sourced from the Garden Cress sprout.
Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate
